Question about Mexican vineyards' statistics


Hello,


I am trying to find some statistical information about the vineyards of México. I understand that there was an agricultural census done recently but I cannot seem to locate it. What I am trying to get is a list of the grape varieties grown in the country with the number of hectares planted to each of them. Do you know where I can get this data? Thank you.

Question about Mexican grapes


Hello,

I am Oz Clarke’s editor here in London. We are trying to find a list of plantings of the top wine grape varieties planted in Mexico.

In particular Chenin Blanc, Syrah/Shiraz and Zinfandel.

The figures we have date from 2001.

Monte Xanic Wines


The Name “Xanic” the flower that blooms after the first rain, comes from the indigenous Cora Indians who today live in regions of Nayarit, between Puerto Vallarta an Mazatlán on Mexico´s Pacific Coast. In November 1987 during the partners first visit to the 200 acres that are today part of our vineyards, the first rain of the season began to fall, suggesting the name "Monte Xanic".

In 1987, Monte Xanic's founding partners, all wine enthusiasts, sought to create a great Mexican wine. Their vision was to produce excellent quality wines with unique personality that reflect and express with distinction the native soil in the Valley of Guadalupe, Baja California. Over the years this dream has been realized; Monte Xanic Wines are among the best quality wines in Mexico and throughout the world.

Monte Xanic wines have been awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in the United States, France and Canada. And perhaps more importantly…our wines are on the tables of people who seek out and appreciate fine wines.

Entertaining wines from Baja


Rick and Deann Bayless, Carlos Alferez (our general manager-partner) and I headed south from San Diego during the first week of August for a remarkable adventure into Mexico’s wine country. That’s when they celebrate the Fiesta de la Vendimia (Wine Harvest Festival), complete with open-air concerts at the wineries (we saw Willie and Lobo at Chateau Camou), winery tours, street fairs and a grand finale paella cook-off with over a hundred entrees.

Mexican wines from Adobe Guadalupe



Adobe Guadalupe is proud of its wines; most of them have won prizes in Mexico and Spain.
Grapes were planted with the intention of starting a winery and in 2000, then they had their first harvest. In 2004, the dream was fully realized with the completion of the winery and cellar room.
Hugo D'Acosta is their winemaker. There is no doubt that the three Adobe Guadalupe wines are eclectic and "ethereal" blends. All are named after archangels names. Wines are well balanced and extremely fruity that will certainly have people talking (and drinking) for many years to come

Tasting of LA Cetto Wines


2005 Chenin Blanc, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
A rich fruity nose. Good palate. Fairly rich with a touch of sweetness. Full and round, and very easy drinking. Very Good. 87/100

2005 Sauvignon Blanc, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
Very, very pale appearance. Very slight, almost imperceptible nose. There is some vague sauvignon blanc character on the palate. Easy and pleasant, but it’s dull, dull, dull. Good. 82/100

2005 Chardonnay, Valle de Guadelupe, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
Fermented in stainless steel. Fresh and very clean on the nose. Quite full flavoured with some richness and a touch of acidity on the finish. Good. 83/100

2004 Chardonnay Private Reserve, Valle de Guadelupe, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
Barrel fermented. A sweetish buttery nose gives onto a round and full palate. Good. 84/100

2005 Primavera, L.A. Cetto
This is a rosé made from cabernet sauvignon. A deepish pink colour, this has sweet raspberry and blackcurrant fruit on the nose. A bit disjointed on the palate, but there are some good flavours. There’s a rather harsh feel on the finish. Good-ish. 81/100

2004 Zinfandel, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
This has some scented, floral fruit on the nose, with lots of blackberry notes. Very open, fresh and fruity on the palate, this feels positively juicy. Lovely and very easy for a zin. Very Good Indeed. 92/100

2004 Petite Sirah, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
Rather closed, green hedgerow nose. Rich and full on the palate with a big structure and soft, yet hefty tannins on the finish. Very Good Indeed. 89/100

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
Barrel aged for 12 months. This has a very sweet, ripe nose with restrained blackcurrant fruit. Ripe and very fruity palate. Good finish. Nice structure. Very Good Indeed. 90/100

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
This was aged for 12 months in barrel and for a further 18 months in bottle. It has a very attractive toasty oaky cassis nose. Lovely attack. Nice silky texture in the mouth. Very smooth with really nice fruit. Very Good Indeed. 93/100

2001 Nebbiolo Private Reserve, Baja California, L.A. Cetto
This was aged for 16 months in barrel and then a further two years in bottle. The nose is rather closed with some slight, sweet cherry fruit. Very smooth and silky on the attack. Fills out nicely on the palate. There are some fairly big tannins, but it is well balanced. Very Good. 88/100

"Tijuana--L A Cetto shows Baja wines in tasting room"


One of our Tijuana adventures was a visit to L A Cetto which has a Tasting Room as well as a wine warehouse and bottling facility in the City.

L A Cetto was established some sixty years ago in the Valle De Guadalupe which has become Baja's wine country ever since. It is now one of Mexico's leading wineries with distribution in countries on every continent.

Our tasting of Cetto wines proved to be a lengthy affair with choices to be made of the 12 varietals made by the winery which is now managed by third generation Luis Alberto Cetto.

Don Luis Seleccion Reservada vintages are named for the founder and represent the premium label of Cetto. We tasted several of the Don Luis Wines including the 2004 Terra which is a Bordeaux blend and a wine we rated very highly. Also getting high marks from us was the Don Luis 2000 Viognier and the Nebbiolo.

We enjoyed the Cetto Sparkling wine and sampled Cetto extra virgin olive oil, also produced at Valle De Guadalupe.

Another label, Castillo del Rhita produced an excellent dry styled Riesling as well as a 2005 Chenin Blanc which was classic to this varietal.

After the tasting we toured the bottling line as well as an extensive underground cellar used for barrel and bottle aging.

Valle de Guadalupe is inland, situated at a midpoint east of Tijuana and Ensenada. Here Cetto has extensive vineyards, winery and another tasting room and gift shop and a picturesque picnic park. We have visited Valle De Guadalupe several times, most recently last year. A Vittles story about that trip appears on the web at www.vittlesvoyages.com.

Don Luis pioneered the Valle de Guadalupe for vineyards and now there are almost 20 wineries in the area.

Italian style

For us one of the joys of wine is the vast variety of varietals and winemaking styles in the marketplace. Trying new varietals in always fun and especially so if this can be done with only a slight investment. Here in California varietals from almost everywhere do well. This is especiallly true with vines that were introduced from Italy. Sangiovese is one of the principal wines of Piedmont and is now produced by many California vintners as well. We tasted the 2005 Crane Lake Sangiovese and liked both the wine and the price. In California Sangiovese seems to produce a softer wine, full of flavors and smooth on the palate.

Crane Lake winemaker Larry Rocha also came through with a pleasant 2007 Pinot Grigio, another Italian immigrant becoming popular with the consumer. Not much to complain about here. The wine offers complex aromas of fruit and an appealing touch of crispness. At $5 both wines offer entry to new wines at a most reasonable price.
